Gardening strategies

View of a garden plot surrounded by shading trees.

The central strategy being applied at Chaseyama in growing crops is a setup in which mixed crops are planted between rows of trees. This reduces the harmful effects of wind and rainfall, provides shade to minimize evaporation, and brings subtle microclimatical modifications that are highly beneficial to crop output and the environment in general.

Planting mixed crops and the choice of trees and shrubs used for the tree rows greatly enhances biodiversity and thus also promotes pest and disease control.
